Five injured old frame Gong Badak Stadium roof collapses


Five construction workers were injured and three wounded when a long frame roof Stadium Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin, here are in the process of repair, collapsed today.

Rajasthan police deputy chief Datuk Hamzah Mohd Jamil said during the incident at 11.30am, eight workers were engaged in repairing the roof of the stadium.

"An estimated 137 meters, about two-thirds of the original structure of the roof has collapsed," he told reporters here today.

Employees who are seriously Nazirul Mohd Nizam Marzuki, 22, Mohd Saidi Ismail, 21, and Safian Abdul Manaf, 21, while two minor injuries were mild Fajrulazmi Wan Ahmad Wan Mohd, 26, and Mohd Shukri Jusoh, 31.

The victims managed to be brought out of the ruins and a half hours after the collapse and is now receiving treatment at the Hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah, he said.

Hamzah said that based on initial investigation, the incident is believed by the weakness of the main roof structure through a series of processes down in the middle of the roof frame.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Said told reporters in Faith Series here, said the incident was believed to be due to the negligence of the contractor and they are responsible for ensuring that stadium repairs done safely.

Stadium had to undergo a process of repair at a cost of RM15 million after its roof collapsed worth RM292 million on June 2, 2009 resulted in about 50 percent of the structure is destroyed.

Meanwhile, a witness Faizan Ahmad Ramli, who is also her friend said he heard a loud noise before the clatter of steel frame collapsed view menghempap ​​friends.

"During the incident the brothers are doing the cutting old roof structure which also involved the use of a number of cranes," he said.
