English may be compulsory subject in SPM
Government is prepared to consider the possibility of establishing English as compulsory subject in the Certificate of Education (SPM).
Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said, however, that the recommendations will be implemented only when the student and the learning system has been prepared.
"People tell me, even learning English in school is good but there is not enough talk and there should be an effort to increase the English language proficiency among students across the country.
"Maybe in the period soon, we will fix that pass in SPM English became a compulsory thing ... must pass, 'he said in his speech at the Malaysia Young Teachers Assembly also attended by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman at the Likas Sports Complex Multipurpose Hall, near here today.
To achieve this, Muhyiddin who is also Education Minister, said the ministry would determine in advance "option English teachers can educate children linguistics so that it can master the English language as what had been achieved in developed countries in the world today".
"Similarly, science, mathematics and English. Bahasa Melayu we can not ignore. These areas we hope will be addressed," he said.
He said the National Education Plan in place now, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak generously allocated RM500 million to be used to train teachers in the subject of Malay, English, Science and Mathematics.
"This one we would prefer others before we made in the future. Then this is a great challenge that his 1Malaysia Young Teachers should bear.
"What is going to determine whether we are successful system depends on the young teacher. I hope this gathering does not stop here, we will go, how to go ahead we will discuss," he said.
The Deputy Prime Minister said the gathering is to provide leadership of the Ministry of Education the opportunity to interact with young teachers who had long served in the ministry. He said that around 49.5 percent of teachers across the country are those aged between 21 and 35 years, and this means that the group is fairly large role in determining the success of the education system, especially guide their children to be educated and knowledgeable generation.
"This is a very important task undertaken by teachers. So we want to be a role undertaken further strengthened, reinforced and strengthened so that our ambition to create or generation educated Malaysian society will be achieved.
"This is because the length of stay of seven years, we will enter the critical threshold in the history of the development of the country as a developed nation in our own mold," he said.
Muhyiddin said although not easy, but it becomes a lot easier if planted commitment, willingness to take on whatever duties and responsibilities entrusted to them.
"Teachers are not like other civil servants, teachers are professional groups for civil servants only knowledge to do what is responsible, but teachers use science and knowledge to their race down so successfully face the future better, especially in Sabah and Sarawak.
"Sabah and Sarawak is a big state, people are not very many, but scattered throughout the state and would require a greater effort.
"If we Peninsula normal to the school to educate their children and not a lot of obstacles and challenges, but in Sabah and Sarawak, the teachers are teachers who are determined and brave, willing to wade the river, distant streets for miles, for hours in a rather unusual situation, "he said.
He said the government has formulated the National Education Development Plan (2013-2025) in three waves in order to boost the country's competitiveness in the education arena.
"What we will do is something which is quite unusual. Many countries to try to be successful country in the field of education but a small portion was able to achieve, largely failed.
"But we are taking a bold step because for us nothing is impossible. If Malaysia wants to become a developed nation, brilliant and fabulous like running up to par with the international global giants, the system we have the best system," he said.
