Total illegitimate child increased

Asked spouses to legally register the marriage in order to address and reduce the rate of illegitimate births.

Advisor to the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Heng Seai Kie said, according to statistics from 2007 to 2011, the number of illegitimate births in the state increased.

"In 2007, the number of births recorded 44.234 cases and increased to 53.788 cases in 2011.

"It comes when the spouses do not register their marriage. They need to be more responsible as they are important for the future of children born.

"If children do not face problems in terms of nationality, ethnicity, religion and their schools," he told reporters.

Seai Kie said the shelter which houses orphaned children do not have birth certificates are also advised to help these groups.
