Train slip


More than 150 rail passengers stranded Ekspres Sinaran Utara after slipping in Kampung Baru here yesterday on the way from Butterworth to Kuala Lumpur.

In the 2.20 pm incident, the train locomotive owned Malayan Railway (KTM Berhad) which carry 10 passenger coaches also suffered a small fire believed to leak diesel.

Operating Officer Fire and Rescue incumbent Ahmad Rajab said he received a call at 2:25 pm and a machine with six members arrived at the scene five minutes later.

"When the firefighters arrived, heavy smoke plume visible on the front of the train engine houses and we managed to control the fire at 2:47 pm before it was completely extinguished 36 minutes later," he told reporters at the scene here.

Initial inspection of the fire was believed to have started in the engine rail diesel tank leakage.

"However, further investigations are being carried out to identify the exact cause of the incident. No passengers were injured in the incident," he said.

One of the passengers, Tan Way Soon, 21, a student said the incident caused him to miss a great meal with his family in Taiping, Perak Chinese New Year today.

"I just want to sleep and suddenly the train stopped mid-journey for a long time before informed burning locomotive and the train derailed.

"I hope to put back to Taiping for tomorrow (today) want to celebrate the Chinese New Year and we are waiting for KTMB management to operate the itinerary so that each can reach their destination safely," he said.

Another passenger, Mohd Fauzi. Noor, 50, who is disabled, said she heard a loud rubbing noise and shouts of the crowd when the incident occurred.

Coordinator for the National Front parliamentary incumbent Lau Chiek Tuan said he personally contacted Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha to inform the incident.

He said Cho Ha has ordered the former managing all passengers traveling to their destinations in the immediate period because some tourists from Japan, China and the United States was involved in the incident.
