Malaysian caught with drugs in Bali

A MALAYSIAN man was arrested in Bali, Indonesia, last week after he tried to smuggle heroin in his underwear.
The suspect, from Selangor, was picked up after arriving at the Ngurah Rai International Airport.
Indonesian authorities had followed up on intelligence reports that a drug courier was on board a flight from here.
According to reports from the Jakarta Post and Detik News online portal, which quoted Bali Customs chief Made Wijaya, the suspect was arrested at 9.30pm.
He was spotted behaving suspiciously at the airport premises.
"An X-ray scan on the suspect's luggage did not pick up anything.
"When an officer conducted a body search on him, it was revealed that he was carrying 372g of heroin in his underwear.
"The estimated value of the drugs was RM265,000."
It was learnt that the suspect had refused to provide information on the potential recipients of the drugs.
However, he admitted that he was paid RM1,000 for bringing the drugs into the country.
The suspect's passport showed that he had been flying frequently between Bali and here over the past three months.
He claimed that he had attempted smuggling the drugs only once.
The reports also said that Indonesian authorities were planning to charge him with trafficking.
If convicted, the charge carries the death penalty.
Federal Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk Noor Rashid Ibrahim yesterday confirmed the reports.
He added that he was waiting to hear more details from the Indonesian authorities.
The suspect is the first foreigner to be nabbed for drug smuggling by Indonesian officials at the airport this year.
Last year, 22 foreigners, including one Malaysian, were caught trying to smuggle drugs into Bali.
The local, Hew Kok Seong, 39, was sentenced to 13 years' jail and fined RM313,000.
Hee was found guilty of smuggling 169 grams of syabu when he arrived on a flight from Bangkok on March 19.
